Code Camp was a huge success!

Last Friday we launched our first Code Camp (#codecamp)!  We promoted the camp about a month ago and "sold out" in less than 24 hours!  The interest is so high that we are planning to put on future 4 week camps next school year, one per quarter.

Students started out with an hour of code from http://code.org/.  They were able to access this from the Fair Grove Code Camp Symbaloo:  http://dashboard.symbaloo.com/mix/fairgrovecodeclub

Our school principal, Mrs. Wagner, also joined in the fun and completed the #hourofcode alongside 28 4th and 5th graders.  Here is a 5th grader helping her navigate level 15:

Putting on the Code Camp was easy!  The student interest was high, problem behavior was non-existent and student engagement was intense.  Not to mention the cost was $0, and we used our mac lab that otherwise sits empty after 2:30.

  1. This is awesome! I may need to try it next year - my 5th grade students LOVE coding. On Day 1 you did an Hour of Code activity... what about the other meeting dates? Did the students pick a coding site/app and stick with it? I want logistics! Tell me more!

  2. We did start with the hour of code! 24 of 28 kids completed it and another finished it at home. The next meeting I had accounts created in Tynker, but for many of the kids it was like jumping from kindergarten to 10th grade. Next we will do the flappy bird game on code.org and after that I will give students the option to try scratch. About half the students did fine with Tynker, but the other half needed some more scaffolding. All and all it's been terrific! The kids LOVE it and so do the parents. Many of them have been working on their own which is what the program is designed to do. I look forward to more 4 week "code camps" next year, mixing up grade levels and giving other students an opportunity. Thanks for commenting. Be sure to check out my symbaloo for coding websites. Thanks!
